10 Great Tucson Restaurants You Need to Try Right Now

Tucson Is a Food City That Surprises People

If you have spent any time on this channel, you know I love talking about food almost as much as I love talking about Tucson real estate. And honestly, one of the best ways to get to know Tucson is through its local restaurants. Food tells you a lot about a city, and Tucson has a food scene that surprises a lot of people.

This is a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, and there is a reason for that. Tucson has deep culinary roots, incredible diversity, and one of the highest percentages of locally owned restaurants in the country. Almost two thirds of our restaurants are locally owned and operated, and I think that gives Tucson a personality you can taste.

Whether you are visiting Tucson, considering moving here, or you already live here and just want to try someplace new, these are ten restaurants I think belong on your list.

A classic burger at Lindy’s on 4th, one of Tucson’s favorite spots for oversized gourmet burgers.

Lindy's on 4th

Let’s start with a Tucson classic. Lindy’s on 4th has that old downtown Tucson charm with a cool artsy vibe, but it also has a surprisingly classy feel. It is one of those places where you can go casual, but it also works for a fun date night, which is not something you can say about every burger place.

And speaking of burgers, come hungry. Actually, come very hungry or bring someone to split one with, because Lindy’s is known for giant burgers and they are no joke. Start with the cheese curds because fried cheese is hard to beat, and the onion rings here are spot on too.

Then move to the burgers. The Heckle and Jekyll is one of my favorites if you like a little heat. Jalapeños, cream cheese, bacon, crispy onions and caramelized onion bacon jam all somehow balance out perfectly. Then there is the famous Peekaboo Burger, which uses grilled cheese sandwiches as the bun. Yes, one grilled cheese on top and another on bottom. It is basically a burger challenge disguised as dinner, and somehow it works.

House-made falafel salad at Lovin’ Spoonfuls vegan restaurant in Tucson Arizona

Fresh falafel salad at Lovin’ Spoonfuls, one of Tucson’s longtime favorites for plant based comfort food.

Lovin' Spoonfuls

If you think plant based comfort food sounds boring, Lovin’ Spoonfuls may completely change your mind. This place has been a Tucson favorite forever and has this cheerful retro diner meets desert chill atmosphere that just feels welcoming.

Their vegan comfort food is seriously satisfying. The chicken Alfredo and spaghetti marinara are surprisingly rich and comforting, and their rotating soup menu is always worth checking out. I also love the Lovin’ Falafel Salad. It is colorful, fresh, and filling with crispy house-made falafel over greens, quinoa, cucumbers, tomatoes and carrots. This is one of those places where you leave feeling nourished and happy.

Taste of Havana sampler platter at Mojo Cuban Kitchen in Tucson Arizona

The Taste of Havana sampler at Mojo Cuban Kitchen lets you try several classic Cuban dishes in one meal.

Mojo Cuban Kitchen

Mojo Cuban Kitchen brings a little Havana energy right into Tucson. This place is vibrant, flavorful and just plain fun. If it is your first visit, I always suggest starting with one of the sampler platters.

The Plato Mixto is a great introduction to Cuban flavors with papas rellenas, croquetas and empanadas. Then there is the Taste of Havana platter where you can sample ropa vieja, mojo chicken and lechón asado all on one plate. That is a serious meal. Everything here feels soulful and satisfying, and if you save room for dessert, the flan and tres leches are fantastic.

Reuben sandwich on marble rye at Bison Witches in Tucson Arizona

The stacked Reuben at Bison Witches is one of the classic sandwiches that has made this Fourth Avenue spot a Tucson favorite.

Bison Witches

If you know Fourth Avenue, you probably know Bison Witches. This place has been a Tucson institution since 1995 and definitely takes me back to my University of Arizona days. Big sandwiches, great soups and a fun bar atmosphere make this a classic Tucson stop.

Their Reuben is excellent, and if you like turkey, the Tucson sandwich is stacked generously. But what they are really famous for are those bread bowls. There is something about a giant bowl of soup in fresh bread on one of our cooler Tucson winter days that just feels perfect. It is comfort food at its best.

Seasonal Southwest chicken dinner at Cielos at Lodge on the Desert in Tucson Arizona

Seasonal Southwest-inspired dinner at Cielos, one of Tucson’s most inviting restaurants for a romantic night out.

Cielos

For a romantic dinner, Cielos at Lodge on the Desert is hard to beat. This place feels special. With indoor and outdoor dining, fireplaces, beautiful grounds and a menu that changes seasonally, it is one of my favorite spots for a classy first date or celebratory dinner.

Start with a charcuterie board, then if it is on the menu, I love the salmon with polenta and grilled asparagus. I have had chefs tell me they love the polenta here and I understand why. Everything feels beautifully prepared, and because the menu changes with the seasons, there is always something new to discover.

Sonoran Eggs Benedict at The Hungry Fox in Tucson Arizona

The Sonoran Eggs Benedict at The Hungry Fox is one of those Tucson breakfast dishes worth coming back for.

The Hungry Fox

Now let’s talk breakfast. The Hungry Fox has been around since 1964 and if a restaurant stays beloved for that long, they are doing something right. This place feels like old Tucson. Warm, welcoming, down-home and full of character.

If you want comfort breakfast, this is the spot. The chicken fried steak with gravy is legendary. And if you watch this channel, you know I judge places by Eggs Benedict. Their Sonoran Eggs Benedict with chorizo and chipotle hollandaise is outstanding.

And then there is the homemade cinnamon roll. It is giant, gooey and glorious. You may need a nap afterward, but it is worth it.

Traditional beef pho soup at Miss Saigon in Tucson Arizona

A steaming bowl of beef pho at Miss Saigon, one of Tucson’s longtime favorites for Vietnamese comfort food.

Miss Saigon

Miss Saigon is another place that takes me back. It has been serving some of Tucson’s best Vietnamese food since 2000 and so many people I know love this restaurant.

There are so many good choices here, but the soups are a huge draw. Seafood pho, beef noodle soups, tofu options, rich broths and fresh ingredients make this the kind of meal that somehow feels comforting and refreshing at the same time. It has won multiple local awards for good reason and remains a Tucson classic.

Chile en Nogada at Guadalajara Original Grill in Tucson Arizona

The Chile en Nogada at Guadalajara Original Grill is one of Tucson’s most unique and memorable Mexican dishes.

Guadalajara Original Grill

If someone asks me where they can get a really Tucson dining experience, Guadalajara Original Grill often comes to mind. It has colorful energy, fresh guacamole made tableside, lively atmosphere and fantastic food. Dinner and a show.

The Chile en Nogada here is one of my favorite dishes in town. It is a chile relleno stuffed with beef and topped with walnut sauce and pomegranate seeds. Beautiful and delicious.

And if you are a meat eater, the Molcajete Ultimo is incredible. Shrimp, chicken and steak come bubbling hot to the table and it is a meal to remember. My husband loves it. Also do not skip dessert because their flan is one of my favorites in Tucson.

Pad Thai noodles at Tuk Tuk Thai restaurant in Tucson Arizona

Classic Pad Thai at Tuk Tuk Thai, one of Tucson’s go-to spots for flavorful Thai comfort food.

Tuk Tuk Thai

When I want spicy Thai food, Tuk Tuk Thai is always a strong option. Great noodles, wonderful curries, flavorful soups and lots of variety make this a place where it feels hard to order wrong.

It is a great family dinner spot and one where every visit feels satisfying. Their desserts deserve some attention too. Fried bananas with ice cream and mango sticky rice are both fantastic and such a fun way to finish the meal.

Pepperoni and jalapeño pizza at Arizona Pizza Company in Vail Arizona

Pepperoni and jalapeño pizza at Arizona Pizza Company, a longtime Vail favorite for cheesy local pizza.

Arizona Pizza Company

And we have to end with pizza. If you are in Vail, Arizona Pizza Company is a local favorite for a reason. It has a relaxed atmosphere, casual vibe and seriously satisfying pizza.

Their pepperoni and jalapeño pizza is one of my favorites. It has that cheesy, spicy, gooey goodness that pizza lovers chase, and yes, it passes the cheese pull test.

Why Tucson’s Food Scene Is So Special

One thing I love about Tucson is how much variety we have. On one list you can go from giant gourmet burgers to vegan comfort food to Cuban cuisine to Vietnamese soups to Sonoran Mexican food to Thai to neighborhood pizza.

That says a lot about a city.

And because so many places are locally owned, these restaurants have personality and history you do not get from chains. That is part of what makes Tucson Tucson.

Final Thoughts

If you are new to Tucson, this list is a great place to start exploring. Go tackle a giant burger at Lindy’s. Plan a date night at Cielos. Grab breakfast at The Hungry Fox. Try Cuban food at Mojo. Get guacamole made tableside at Guadalajara.

There is so much good food here and Tucson really is a foodie city.
